Current state of research and teaching activities
It is difficult to make a piston sound source having diameter much larger than a wave length. Sound pressure level higher than 160dB can be obtained by a stepped circular vibrating plate in frequency range from 18kHz to 40kHz. A directivity can be obtained narrower than 10 degrees. Ultrasonic levitation is one of the applications to use the stepped circular vibrating plate, and a 2 grams steel column can be levitated in teh gravity field by using the stepped circular vibrating plate at the frequency of 20kHz.
